Additional notes - Elton H. Liles was mortally wounded May 31, 1944 on mainland New Guinea near Wakde Island and died 3 days later. At the time he was extending a telephone line and had entered the jungle alone. He was confronted by 3 Japanese soldiers. When he refused to go with them as a prisoner, he was attacked. His calls for help alerted his fellow soldiers. He was issued a Bronze Star Medal posthumously.
